One of the most important aspects of being an officer has to be weapon retention. It is a recurring nightmare for many officers – the realization that their own handgun can be used against them, or other citizens. Approximately 14 % of the police officers in the USA who are killed in the line of duty are shot with their own weapon. Keeping our weapon secured and not allowing it to be taken away has to be a high priority for every officer when they go on duty. The same concerns are present when an officer goes off duty. The simple fact that you have a handgun makes officers a natural target for people who want a weapon, and do not care how they get it or how many people get hurt in the process.
The Backup’s course on
Weapon Retention covers these essential officer safety considerations:
- In-holster weapon retention
- Out-of-holster weapon retention
- Gun grabs from behind the officer
- Surprise attacks
The techniques shown in the class are not difficult to master. Each scenario listed above is gone over carefully by the instructors so the student has a clear picture of how to train. The end result is an officer armed with simple, effective moves that allow him to counteract attempts aimed at taking his weapon away.
Because of the sensitivity of the information provided in this course, it will only be available to certified law enforcement officers.
