Stanley Tookie Williams

Stanley Tookie Williams was co-founder of the Crips gang. He was convicted of committing four murders in the late 1970s, which he denied even until his death by lethal injection in 2005. During his time in prison he wrote numerous children’s books denouncing the gang life and resulting in five nominations for the Nobel Peace Prize and one Nobel Prize for literature.

Hundreds Gather for Williams’ Funeral – December 20, 2005
Under heavy police presence, mourners including gang members flashing hand signs waited in line to enter the 1,500-seat Bethel AME Church for a ceremony that stretched more than four hours. Vendors sold T-shirts with Williams' picture, and a large TV set up in the parking lot allowed the overflow crowd to watch the service. Williams was executed December 13 despite clemency pleas from celebrities and others who said he had rededicated his life to peace.
